Hi Folks, thank you for visiting my page and learning a little more about me. I am a passionate champion for birth, parenting, and human liberation. I came to this field of service in late 2017 when I attended an orientation hosted by Oakland Better Birth Foundation. There I was introduced to doula work and its essential impact in addressing the devastating maternal and fetal mortality rates in the U.S., especially for Black and Indigenous birthing people. I learned then the transformative power that birth can provide survivors of abuse when survivors are well prepared and supported for birth. Birthwork is radical activism in action when the intention is to provide the best birth and postpartum outcomes to all who birth and parent. I began my training with Oakland Better Birth Foundation and then continued my training with Natural Resources, San Francisco, in Birth (2018) and Postpartum Doula Care (2021). This daily personal inventory informs the care I provide. I am a fierce champion for parents to access and experience the birth and postpartum care that suits them best. Together, as part of your birth and postpartum care team, I am dedicated to providing kind, compassionate, non-judgmental, attentive, and nurturing support. Through relationship and through my practice as a postpartum & parenting companion I intend for my impact to stand for liberation, justice, and community. We are not meant to be alone. Together, we are stronger. Presence is something that I offer first and foremost- to be a witness and partner alongside you during your life transition. What excites me most about this field of service is the opportunity to decolonize birth and parenting. I support families to trust their bodies, to engage in their ancestral and cultural wisdom, as well as to promote parents’ informed consent and decision-making. I'm Zinnia! - I was a young single mom with my first child. Hold up… I should say I was a fierce AF single mom who still reflects on the strength and wisdom of my younger self for all she has instilled in me and how I use those humbling first lessons to support new parents now. I continue to evolve as a parent each day. My joy comes in raising liberated children by celebrating their identities and admiring their own inner wisdom, talents, and unique gifts. We raise our children in a sex-positive, body-positive, anti-racist home, where we openly discuss topics concerning race, identity, gender, and sexuality. I am also a registered officiant. I have had the pleasure and honor to officiate weddings and a celebration of life. I am also a Reiki practitioner and have been trained as a yoga instructor, focusing on breath-work and meditation. A doula supports the parents’ physical and emotional needs, provides newborn care and instruction, lends feeding guidance whether it be with bottle-feeding or lactation assistance, and helps with light household tasks. Postpartum doulas do not offer any medical advise or provide any clinical care. Doulas are trained as a generalist and can help suggest when families should consult an expert or refer to their midwife/clinician. A doula aims to lighten the load of these early tender days, to assist the bond between caregiver and their new baby. Parents benefit from a compassionate, non-judgmental presence. Doulas are present to process birth, surrogate and adoption stories, and to be a resource of knowledge, willing to answer questions and refer out to experts where appropriate.
